Are you Made for Medicine?
Learn more about how Made for Medicine is supporting African American and Black students with an interest in pursuing a career in the medical field.
If it is to be, it’s up to me.
The mission of Made for Medicine is to increase the number of Black doctors, advance health equity, and promote racial justice.
The Made for Medicine Program
According to the Association of American Medical Colleges’ (AAMC) 2024 Diversity in Medicine Facts and Figures report, African Americans comprise only 5.2% of the U.S. physician workforce. Therefore, Made for Medicine was founded as a programmatic solution to redress the underrepresentation of African Americans in the medical field.
Made for Medicine is an initiative to attract more African American and Black talent to the medical profession through sustaining their pathway to medicine, delivering a culturally responsive curriculum, and providing access to same-race faculty role models. Students in grades 6-12 complete comprehensive and rigorous programming that supplies them with critical foundational knowledge and hands-on learning experiences prior to their undergraduate and medical school educations.
What We’re Building:
Core Programming
Made for Medicine is divided into phases: Introduction to Medicine (Grades 6-7), Deeper Dive (Grades 7-8), Freshman Experience (Grade 9), and Commitment to Medicine (Grades 10-12). The goal is for participants to leave the program with a solid foundation and a commitment to pursuing a future career in medicine.
Online Community
To reach beyond Central Ohio, Made for Medicine hosts monthly virtual sessions during the academic year featuring physicians from various specialties. They share their journey to the medical profession and describe what their careers in medicine entail. These sessions are open to the public and can be accessed via Circle, an online community platform.
Educational Outreach
Made for Medicine engages in community outreach programming for elementary school-aged students in central Ohio. During our outreach programming, we provide students with hands-on enrichment activities that cover age-appropriate medical concepts and foundational learnings in medicine.
